Roscoff/Morlaix and surrounding area
A wild and authentic land in northern Brittany, Finistère...
Roscoff, a small coastal and seaside town with beautiful beaches, enjoys a mild climate all year round thanks to the Gulfstream. It was this climate, along with its iodised air and the purity of its water, that made Roscoff the very first site to host a thalassotherapy centre, back in 1899. Today, Roscoff is still a leading centre for thalassotherapy. The town also boasts another of its coastal treasures, seaweed harvesting in one of Europe's largest wild seaweed beds. Strolling between Roc'h Kroum and the Perharidy peninsula, you can discover the 6 varieties of seaweed grown for harvesting and take advantage of low tide to cool off in one of the two natural seawater pools.
Back in Roscoff, a visit to the magnificent botanical garden is a must, with its magnificent panoramic view over the Bay of Morlaix. Then linger in the historic centre, wandering through its narrow streets, admiring the pink granite facades, the house known as ‘Marie Stuart’, the church of Notre-Dame-de-Croaz-Batz with its stone vessels and superb bell tower. There's no shortage of things to do in Roscoff: visit a traditional canning factory to find out more about the life of a seaweed grower, visit the fish market and the ‘Maison des Johnnies’ (history of the famous Roscoff onion). Discover the coastal path of Saint-Pol-de-Léon, along the Morlaix bay and its superb landscapes, which you will also find by hiking on the Perharidy peninsula or by embarking for the Batz island 15mn away by boat. Just 30 minutes away, Morlaix, the town with three hills, can be explored on foot... Stroll through the medieval quarter: cobbled streets, timber-framed houses and a pretty harbour await you. To see the town from above, climb to the 1st floor of the 19th-century viaduct, with its imposing arches and remarkable view over the port, the town centre and the roofs of Morlaix. Near Morlaix is Carantec, the jewel of the bay with its superb beaches and numerous islets.
The Pink Granite Coast is just 35 km away, as are the Monts d'Arrée... The hardest part will be making a choice, as Brittany has more than enough to surprise you...
